All around you, you hear "In the Cloud!" as people convert to a new religion of storing data online. OK, maybe not to that extent, but more people are starting to get familiar with the idea of having all your data anywhere. First, let's get familiar with it ourselves. * What is cloud computing? Basically, large companies put huge servers (like massive storage computers) on the internet for consumer's usage. This means that they basically put up a bunch of hard drive space (though it's not exactly like it) on the internet, so that every user can have their own little space with their name on it. It is online storage so you can put your files on the web and retrieve them later. * Where is the cloud? Each company that offers "cloud computing" has a big office or warehouse somewhere with all the servers that hold the cloud structure within it. There are many different clouds offered by many companies (including many free ones for people with accounts like SkyDrive with Windows and Cloud Drive with Amazon) that let you store a limited amount of files on their servers, and each company has a place where the information is stored. * What's so special about the cloud? When using the cloud, all your information is kept on the internet, not kept on your individual computer. What that means is that you could go anywhere, or any computer or device on the Internet, and have instant access to your files like you were right at home. With applications for many mobile devices allowing for extended use of cloud computing onto mobile platforms. So anywhere in the world, with a simple sign in, all your pictures, videos, documents, and more are with you. Another example of cloud computing is Google Docs, where you can log in with your Google Account and create spreadsheets, slideshows, and text documents right on the web, available from almost any device. * Is the cloud safe? Well, that's a hard question to answer. If you store all your information including private numbers that may lead to identity theft anywhere on the Internet, there is the potential for disaster (as we've found out with the PlayStation Network). So if you keep all your passwords in a document on the cloud and accidentally stay signed in at the library when using their computer, someone else does have the potential to steal all your documents and personal information. Clouds are usually relatively safe though, and it usually is the error of the user that information is stolen, such as an easily guessed password or a ridiculously easy security question. So if you want to keep your information secure, don't put social security numbers, passwords, or credit card numbers on the cloud, and keep your log in information secure. It's eventually up to you, though, whether the risks outweigh the benefits of an online and mobile lifestyle. |
